Internet Safety Is Equally As Important As Road Safety

Grade 5 and 6 students at Central Elementary Community School in Chilliwack, British Columbia demonstrated their knowledge of Internet safety by writing, directing, and producing their own Internet Safety Commercials.

Students were given the following assignment:
Decide on a topic for your commercial. Here are some examples:
  • Don't share personal information online
  • Don't post pictures of yourself online
  • Don’t use webcams or post photos online only with your parents' and guardians' knowledge and supervision.
  • Be aware that information you give out in blogs could also put you at risk of victimization
  • Never give out your password to anyone other than your parent or guardian
  • Never meet in person with anyone you first “met” on a social networking site. Some people may not be who they say they are
  • Never respond to harassing or rude comments posted on your profile. Delete any unwanted messages or friends who continuously leave inappropriate comments
  • Remember that posting information about your friends could put them at risk. Protect your friends by not posting any names, passwords, ages, phone numbers, school names, or locations

Steps:
  1. Produce a storyboard (picture divided into cells for each shot) of what the commercial will look like
  2. Write a script detailing what each member of the commercial will say
  3. Write a list of props you will need for the video, actors/actresses, and locations
  4. Once all these steps have been completed you may begin filming.

Note: When you film – You need to introduce this an informational video on Internet safety and state your topic. When you've finished filming you need to restate the topic. For example, “Internet safety is just as important as road safety. Never share pictures online!”
